Drunk man takes bird cage from yard and faces charges

A Nesquehoning man who had too much to drink found out that it is not OK to take another person's bird cage, even if he believed it was out for trash because it was in a yard.

Lawrence A. Stewart, 49, of West Catawissa Street, was charged by borough police with theft of movable property, receiving stolen property and public drunkenness. On Feb. 21, Nesquehoning police officer Richard Neikam was dispatched to the unit block of West Catawissa Street for a report of a man stealing a bird cage from the homeowner's fenced-in yard. The man, identified as Stewart, was seen running toward Rosetta's Pizza.Neikam spoke with the victim, who said he was told by neighbors that Stewart took the 5-foot tall bird cage, valued at $300, from the side of his house and was walking down the sidewalk with it. He then chased Stewart, who dropped the cage before ducking on another property in an attempt to hide.Police were called later that evening by the victim once he saw Stewart return to his residence.Neikam went to Stewart's home and spoke with a woman at the residence, who said he was not there, but appeared to be extremely nervous.Neikam asked to search the apartment and found Stewart hiding in a bedroom closet.Stewart told Neikam that he thought the cage was out for trash and decided to take it as he was walking home because he was planning on getting two birds for his house. He then apologized for the incident. He also told police that he had a few beers that evening. A breath test yielded a 0.093 BAC.
