Whooping cough confirmed at Lehighton school

A confirmed case of Pertussis, or whooping cough, has been reported at Lehighton Area Middle School district officials announced in a letter to parents, students and staff Thursday.

According to the letter, the affected person is being treated and is not in school.“We are making a ‘good faith’ effort and being extra diligent with the cleaning at the middle school and in addition will be adding hand sanitizers to all classrooms in an effort to make this an isolated case,” Superintendent Jonathan Cleaver said.“Pertussis is treatable with antibiotics,” according to the district’s letter. “Anyone in close contact with children or adults diagnosed with Pertussis may also need to be treated with antibiotics.”The last confirmed case of whooping cough in the district was at the high school in March 2014, Cleaver said.“We are following the same procedures as it aided in keeping that case isolated,” he added.A confirmed case of whooping cough was also reported in Weatherly Area School District several weeks ago.Early symptoms, according to Lehighton’s health services department, include runny nose, sneezing, a low-grade fever or a cough that, if untreated, becomes worse at night.Parents noticing any symptom in their child are advised to contact a physician, stay home from school and notify the school.A Pertussis information sheet is available on the district’s website,
