Zion Opera Workshop to dedicate shows to late director

The Zion Opera Workshop in Lehighton will hold its production over the course of three days.

It will present "Nice Work If You Can Get It" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, with a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday.Tickets are still currently available for all shows at Carbon County Music and More, at 115 S. Second St. Lehighton, or by calling the box office manager at 484-629-3116.The production takes a lighthearted, entertaining look at a trio of bumbling bootleggers meeting up with the rich, elite Evergreen and Winter families. It features the songs of George and Ira Gershwin, as well as original music.Although the show resembles the classics of the past, it was just created in 2012, so its comedy is updated and fresh. The set design was created and constructed by husband and wife team Duane and Pati Reichard.Deb Strausberger, of TNT Dance Studio, is the choreographer.Stage direction is by Jessica Schafer, and Zion Opera Workshop is under the direction and supervision of Bradly R. Cressley, director of music at Zion UCC.All of this year's performances are dedicated to the loving memory of the late Paul R. Smith, who had a vision back in 1970.This vision soon became a Lehighton Tradition, as 47 Broadway-style shows have been produced on Smith Auditorium's stage, and countless memories and friendships were the result.Smith not only taught singing and dancing, but also taught the group what it means to be a family.Smith passed away from lymphoma in 2016, but the group hopes to carry on his vision and share this love of theater with generations to come.

Jessica Schafer, who portrays Eileen Evergreen, rehearses a scene with Chief Berry, played by Adam Reichard.
