Golden Girls end Wreckers' season

POTTSVILLE - Weatherly tried and tried and dug deep.

The Wreckers weren't just content to make it to the District 11 Class A postseason tournament - they were determined to get a win.Weatherly maintained that dream for the first half of its quarterfinal round game with Nativity. But by the middle of the third quarter, the dream had turned into a nightmare.Unable to withstand a rallying Nativity club, the Wreckers watched in dismay with nary an answer as the Golden Girls pulled away for a 58-38 victory."We kind of lost our intensity. A veteran team takes the air out of the ball, but we're not there just yet," said Weatherly coach Kevin Kringe.Nativity used its set game in the second half to seize the momentum. Trailing 29-26 early in the third quarter, the Golden Girls reeled off seven unanswered points to surge to a 33-29 lead."We were trying to get them tired, but It seemed like we got tired," said Kringe. "Their point guard (Mykenzie Malacusky) kept them in their sets. She was tough."Megan Pfeifer, Megan Hinkle, Gabrielle Obert and Emily Zoscin all stepped to the fore in the first half, enabling the Wreckers to stay close as they trailed just 26-24 at half. But Nativity then decided to extend the pressure on Zoscin to cut down her dribble penetration to the basket."All year I've asked Julia Klembara to defend the other team's toughest player," said Nativity coach Scott Forney. "She did an outstanding job on Zoscin. "We wanted to contain her outside shooting. She's a good player."Peifer went backdoor for an early basket in the second half that extended the Wreckers' lead to 29-26. But that's when Nativity took charge, grabbing the lead and stretching it to 42-33 after three quarters."We kind of panicked some," said Kringe. "We were pressing. Shots weren't falling and then they started to take control."Nativity opened the final period with a 9-1 flurry to tput the game out of reach."Two years in a row we got here," said Kringe. "Now we've got to go back and try to get better."SHOT THROUGH THE HEART ...The Wreckers couldn't find the range at the spacious Martz Hall, shooting just 13-for-52 (25 percent) for the game.BEEN THERE, DONE THAT ... While Weatherly is trying to re-establish a playoff identity that has been quiet for years, Nativity has enjoyed outstanding postseason success for a large part of the past few decades.TOP GUNS ... For Weatherly, Zoscin led the way with 12 points and Lindsey Hoffman had a bang up night firing in 10 points. The winners had tremendous balance led by Malacusky with 16 points, Mallory Sanders with 11, Madison Clarke with 10 and Madison Ulsh with nine.WEATHERLYZoscin 4-3-10-12, Hoffman 3-1-2-10, Peifer 3-2-2-8, T.
