Charges dropped in Tamaqua stabbing

Tamaqua Police withdrew the charges of attempted murder in the third degree and aggravated assault they filed against Gregorio Flores, 36, of 62B Hunter St., Tamaqua, after the man who accused him of stabbing him refused to testify.

Flores was charged after a Jan. 21 incident, when Russell "R.J." Nelson contacted an officer, saying he had been stabbed by Flores as they were in the first block on Market Street.Nelson's shirt was covered in blood and he had a towel wrapped around his waist. After speaking with the officer, Nelson went to St. Luke's Miners Hospital-Coaldale campus for treatment. He was transferred to St. Luke's Hospital in Bethlehem due to a punctured lung and blood loss.Police searched for Flores that Saturday, but were unable to apprehend him until Sunday. In addition to the attempted murder and aggravated assault charges, he was arraigned on misdemeanor charges of simple assault, reckless endangerment and possession of an instrument of crime. Bail was set at $500,000 straight cash. Unable to post bond, he was lodged in the Schuylkill County Prison in Pottsville, scheduled for a preliminary hearing before District Magisterial Judge Stephen Bayer this past Tuesday. That's when the charges were withdrawn.Despite having the charges dropped, Flores was not released from prison, as he faces drug related charges filed by Pennsylvania State Police. That case was continued on Tuesday, with bail remaining at $50,000, which he was unable to post.Flores also has outstanding charges of resisting arrest, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia, filed by Tamaqua Police in connection with a June 10, 2016 incident. Those charges were bound over for trial in the Schuylkill County Courts after a preliminary hearing last August. No trial date has been set.
