Luzerne man gets state prison term for theft incident

A Luzerne County man was sentenced to a state prison term on Thursday in Carbon County court on a theft count.

Timothy James Brotzman, 34, of Freeland, was sentenced by Judge Joseph J. Matika to serve six to 12 months in a state correctional institution. Matika also rejected a request to have the prison term run concurrent with a 15- to 30-month state prison sentence recently imposed on Brotzman by Luzerne County court. Matika ruled the terms would run consecutively. He was charged by state police at Hazleton with entering a home along Buck Mountain Road, in Lehigh Township, on Dec. 25, 2015, and removing a television. The home belongs to a relative of the defendant.Matika told Brotzman, "As so many people who come before me, you have a drug issue." He added, "You have a long and storied history of stealing, probably due to your drug addiction."Matika said the state system was the best location for Brotzman because of the drug problems that it offers.Brotzman asked that the term run concurrent with the Luzerne sentence because "I want to get back with my kids."In addition to the prison term, Brotzman was ordered to get a drug and alcohol evaluation, zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use, pay court costs of about $1,000 and render 50 hours of community service. He was given credit for eight days spent in Carbon on the charge.
