Ski-a-thon March 12 to aid Allentown special needs school

Registration is open for the seventh annual Teddy Bedrossian Ski-a-Thon March 12, at Blue Mountain Resort in Palmerton.

The Ski-a-Thon honors the life of Teddy Bedrossian and raises money for the Elwyns Davidson School, a non-profit school for students 3 to 21 years old with physical, intellectual and developmental disabilities in Allentown.Bedrossian was an 18-year-old, medically-fragile special needs boy who passed away nine years ago from kidney failure. He attended Elwyn and received outstanding education, exceptional care and compassionate support."Unable to talk or hear, he brought an indescribable richness to everyone he met through his acts of kindness and his contagious smile," a press release stated. "He touched the lives of so many at Elwyn.""There is no place like Elwyn," said Teddy's father, Dr. Edward Bedrossian Jr. "He loved going there."The Ski-a-Thon is open to skiers, snowboarders, snow tubers and beginning skiers. The registration fee includes a full-day, VIP lift ticket with line-cutting privileges, a 2017 first-time lesson package, commemorative event T-shirt, continental breakfast, luncheon, beginner ski lessons, an awards ceremony with grand prizes, raffles, a silent auction and live music.Proceeds from the event will support the Davidson School Building Initiative, which seeks to raise $10 million in private gifts to reposition and rebuild the school buildings and provide a campus environment that best meets the educational, physical and emotional needs of the students. The state-of-the-art facility for children with intellectual disabilities will also broaden the school's services, increase the student population, and provide a safe, positive and nurturing environment. The fundraising goal for the 2017 Ski-a-Thon is $50,000.Last year, the event raised $30,000, said Jennfier Cohen, a spokesperson for Elwyn. There were 53 skiers and 13 volunteers."As the need for our services increases and the numbers of students we serve and care for rises, we are looking to raise additional funds," Cohen said. "Therefore the overall goal of the event was raised."Registration will begin at 8 a.m. The Ski-a-Thon runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. with the awards ceremony at 2:30 p.m.For more information about the Ski-a-Thon, visit
