Tamaqua diner closing its doors

Early birds and night owls in Tamaqua will have to find a new diner, when the Tamaqua Diner closes its doors this weekend.

Employees said they have been told that the diner is shutting its doors on Sunday at 2 p.m.Known for its Cowboy Burgers and Spiderman spaghetti for kids, the diner was a favorite of early morning and late night customers.The diner was a mainstay for any meal of the day, including a late night snack.Community groups often chose the diner for their breakfast meetings.It also provided 30 jobs to people in the Tamaqua area, many of them longtime faithful employees.Lauralee Reber worked 11 years at the Tamaqua diner.She said it's been a family atmosphere in more ways than one -- working alongside siblings, in-laws, and even her children."Some of us grew up working here," she said.Some employees were there since it opened, Reber said.The diner's owners weren't available Friday.The original dining car dates back to 1954.The current owners, Christos and Vasilos Argiros, took over in 1996, and purchased the adjacent garage to be renovated in 2006. The diner also extends into a row-house next door. Between 1986 and 1996 it was known as JB's Diner.Prior to that, it was owned by the Taylor family, who own the Beacon Restaurant in Hometown.Vanessa Gerhard of the Tamaqua Chamber said she was sorry to hear the news of the diner's closing."Going back to the 70s, they had a jukebox on every table. I always loved playing the little jukebox," Gerhard said.She said she hopes that the diner is able to find new success in the future."Just because it's closing doesn't mean it's the end. It could be a good opportunity for someone," she said.
