Galen Glen chili cook-off benefits fire company

The Galen Glen Winery spiced up their Saturday afternoon with the Fourth Annual Chili Cook Off.

The winery is teaming up with the West Penn Fire Company for the third year to raise funds for the fire company. The fire company recently signed for a new firetruck.Cheryl Leone of New Ringgold represented the fire company on Saturday with her Fire House Smoked Chili. Her chili features a smokier taste rather than spice.Tom and Angie Bremer showed off their use of spices in their chili. The chili was spicy, but was a favorite of many."This is a lot of fun," Angie Bremer said."Good camaraderie," husband Tom Bremer agreed.Paul VanOsten is an amateur to the formal chili cook-off, but his chili was popular throughout the day. Would he participate again?"Probably. Especially if I win," VanOsten said.Chris and Holly Wagner focused their chili on the traditional recipe. It featured a lot of tomatoes, fire-roasted bell peppers and ancho chili peppers."We like that it's a fundraiser," Holly Wagner said.Marlyn Kissner featured her Mom's Chili Soup. The soup was passed down from memory from Marlyn's mother, Martha Linski.The recipe is not spicy, but focuses on the traditional chili taste with peppers, beans and, of course, wine.First place was Cheryl Leone of New Ringgold; second place was Paul VanOsten of Lehighton; third place was Marlyn Kissner; and runners-up were Tom Bremer of Brodheadsville and Chris and Holly Wagner of Bethlehem.The cook-off drew in crowds all afternoon.Julie Bolline and her husband were visiting Jim Thorpe when they saw the cook-off was happening.Sherry Bartnick missed last year's cook-off, but made sure she was there for this year's."We love chili," Bartnick said.
