Peaceful Knights hosts brunch to help homeless

Peaceful Knights held its Winter Warmth Brunch on Saturday to benefit the homeless in Carbon County.

Approximately 150 people came to Dean Anthony's Banquet Hall to support the cause.Scott Lakatos, director of Peaceful Knights, said donations go down in the winter months. The rush of the holidays and the extra expenses winter brings cause people to scale back on donations."We wanted to wait until after the holidays and start 2017 off with a bang," Lakatos said. The fundraiser included a meal of lemon pepper chicken, roasted potatoes, layered egg sausage, Caesar salad and more. Cerulean Hills provided entertainment for the brunch.Peaceful Knights has been benefiting Carbon County for 10 years. The organization was founded by Aggie Shehadeh. She was burdened for many years that the homeless in Carbon County did not have anybody looking out for them. She started the organization and originally put the men up in a motel. After seeing the expenses and the money it took to have a motel room, Peaceful Knights worked with landlords of apartments. The men are required to look for work for 30 hours each week until they find a job and must also volunteer for 10 hours a week. Weekly meetings are held for the men and church attendance is required."We're a Christian organization," Shehadeh said. "We recognized we can't tell everyone everything. But if we connect them with the big guy, they will know the source that wherever they go after they leave, they know where to go to get the help."A resident of Peaceful Knights, who asked to stay anonymous, shared his story of how the organization has helped him since being released from prison. The resident did not have a plan after being released. His family lives out of state and Peaceful Knights was the only place for him to go."I was raised Christian," he said. "I strayed and went and did the wrong things. Went to jail for it. It's never too late to turn around your life."He is still a resident at Peaceful Knights. He plans to help with the organization after completing the rehabilitation."We are humbled by the turnout and support of our community," Shehadeh said. "It's been amazing. People are constantly stopping by at the shelter to bring food, donations and gifts."Peaceful Knights will be holding a dog walk and show fundraiser in the spring at the D&L trail. The money raised this year will go toward capital improvement of the shelter."Our whole agenda is to understand and set them up with sources and not failure," Lakatos said.
