St. Hill leads Jim Thorpe

After five years, the Route 209 trophy is back in Jim Thorpe.

The Olympians reclaimed the rivalry hardware thanks to an 18-7 victory over Lehighton Friday night.Justin St. Hill lived up to the namesake of his school with an All-American performance, carrying the rock 34 times for 246 yards, a feat that puts the shifty running back over 1,000 yards for the season."I got a taste of this game last year when I ran with Robbie Heller who was a great back here," said St. Hill. "Tonight I give credit to my offensive line,"They opened the holes for me. As a team we came to play tonight to get us ready for the district playoffs."St. Hill's herculean effort was supported by the Jim Thorpe Red Swarm defense that allowed Lehighton only 29 rushing yards for the game and just one first half first down."It was a great team effort for us tonight," said Jim Thorpe coach, Mark Rosenberger. "Our defense was lights out. We played with terrific physicality against a tough Lehighton team."Following the recovery of an onside kick to open the game, the Olympians failed to capitalize with the favorable field position. Despite Lehighton's inability to move the chains on offense in the first quarter, the game was scoreless after twelve minutes of play. That's when Jim Thorpe picked up the momentum thanks to a huge play by its special teams. With Lehighton punting from deep in its own territory, the Olympians' Colin Jacobs broke through to block the kick and Max Schlenner fell on the ball in the end zone for a 6-0 Jim Thorpe lead.On its next possession, Thorpe drove six plays on a short field to stretch its lead to 12-0. St. Hill busted off right tackle and went the final 12 yards to pay dirt.Despite Lehighton's lack of offensive power, one big play put them right back in the game. On first down from their own 39, quarterback, Nick Skrinkosky floated a pass into the arms of Mike Mayernik who scampered down the right sideline for a 61-yard pass and run touchdown play. But the rest of the game belonged to St. Hill and the Jim Thorpe.St. Hill answered the Mayernik score with a three-yard touchdown run to make it 18-7 at halftime.Thorpe controlled the ball and the clock in the second half, but had several drives end in Indian territory."We couldn't finish drives," said Roseneberger. "but our defense stood tall and stopped them every time."Lehighton threatened to make it a one score game late in the fourth quarter when sophomore Chris Whiteman came in at quarterback. But Trevor Keefer broke up a Whiteman pass in the end zone to seal the win for Jim Thorpe."I'm very disappointed in how we played," said Lehighton coach, Tom McCarroll. "and that's on me. I have to do a better job preparing us. We've had injuries and some of our players are learning new positions, but that's no excuse. We will work to get better for the playoffs."While Lehighton will enter the postseason on a five-game losing streak, Jim Thorpe will go in with two victories in its last three games."We built some momentum here and that's important going into the playoffs," said Rosenberger. "It 's also nice to get the trophy back. It 's been in the Lehighton hallway far too long."ONSIDES... Each team tried an onside kick. The Olympians recovered their kick to open the game. Lehighton failed on its squib attempt to open the second half.KEEFER KEY... Keffer, Jim Thorpe's junior defensive back, made two key plays. He had a third quarter interception in addition to his fourth quarter knock down in the end zone.PERSONAL BEST... St. Hill's 246 yards were the most he's gained in a game in his career and he achieved it on the most carries he's had in any one game.
