Dawgs' Belfonti batters Bangor

Faced with an early deficit, Northern Lehigh head coach Joe Tout knew his team needed to adjust if it was going to beat Bangor.

Tout watched the Bulldogs give up two first quarter touchdowns last Friday night as the Slaters capitalized on turnovers to grab a 14-0 lead. With momentum - and the game - slipping away, Tout altered his game plan. The end result was a 39-33 Northern Lehigh victory, one that saw tailback Brandon Belfonti gash the Bangor defense for 274 yards rushing and three scores, including the game-winner late in the fourth quarter.Belfonti's big night propelled the Bulldogs to their first win of the season and helped the senior capture Times News Player of the Week honors for Week 3.While he might have been the focal point of the offense Friday night, Belfonti was quick to praise those around him for making his success possible."It felt really good. It was really gratifying," he said. "But I have to give a lot of credit to my team and my line - they're amazing and they gave me a lot of running room and I just followed."The offensive line, made up of seniors David Neff and Jeremy Schmick, juniors Brandon Dye and Zak Sullivan and sophomore Dominic Bandle, along with tight ends Nate Cunfer and Damion Rodriguez, paved the way for an offense that ran the ball 55 times, with Belfonti recording 28 carries. But that wasn't always the plan."We came into the game, and we didn't anticipate running those plays to be honest with you," Tout admitted. "We came out a little more spread to start with, (but) we had two turnovers off the bat."It's one of those things, when it's not working ... we went double-tight (end) and tried to compose ourselves, which is more-or-less what it was. And that first series (on Northern Lehigh's third possession in the first quarter), we go double-tight and we just chunked (yards). We didn't have real long runs; we just chunked them and chunked them. It was our outside toss and our inside toss that were our two big plays, and the counter-trey. So it was three plays we kept running all night."You have to give him (Belfonti), Mason (Seiler) and those guys credit. They didn't try to beat the blocks to the hole - they were patient, they kind of sat back and let everything set up. And then as the game went on, those holes progressed."Belfonti, Seiler (nine carries, 83 yards) and Kellen Hendrix (10 carries, 36 yards, one touchdown) picked apart the Slaters' defense, accounting for 393 of Northern Lehigh's 442 rushing yards."He was patient last week. I thought what he did very well was he was patient with his blocking," Tout said of Belfonti. "We don't have the team speed that we've had in past years so it's been a little bit of a process telling these guys that that's the reality; we're not going to be a big cutback team; we're not going to beat someone that gets to the edge; we're not going to be able to do that. But what I saw from him, Mason Selier (and) Kellen Hendrix running the ball Friday was they let the blocks set up."The offense appears to be clicking, scoring 70 points in the past two games. The Bulldogs will look to continue that trend Friday against an undefeated Notre Dame Green Pond (3-0) team."I feel like this week in practice, we've been really clean. We're not taking Notre Dame lightly," Belfonti said. "We've got a lot of set positions now, and I feel like we're just where we need to be. Our chemistry is great."
