Commercial building fire quelled in Tamaqua

Firefighters from Tamaqua quickly extinguished a small office building fire Wednesday.

Responders were dispatched to 325 S. Center St., Route 309, at 11:25 a.m. for a report of a possible commercial building fire.

Smoke was pouring from the wood-frame, one-story office of Mermon Motors when firefighters arrived. Those at the scene said responders cut a hole in the roof to access the affected area. The cause of the fire is initially thought to be electrical in nature.

One fireman was treated at the scene for heat-related illness.

Traffic on Route 309 was backed up in both directions, compounded by heavy Farmers Market Wednesday traffic volume.

There was no report on the extent of damage and no other details were available.

Cold refreshments were provided to responders courtesy of Speedway, an adjacent business.
