Big plays give Panther Vy. big win

For football fans who like to see long touchdown plays, Panther Valley’s 40-18 win over Columbia Montour Vo Tech on Friday night did not disappoint, especially if they were rooting for the home black and gold.

On their first possession, Panther quarterback, Hunter Kennedy found Dan Gilberry for a 67-yard pass and run play, and with just a little over a minute gone, the home team had a 6-0 lead.PV’s second drive took a bit longer. Sophomore running back, Rene Figueroa capped a four play, 47 yard drive with a two yard TD off tackle run.The Panthers would tally 26 unanswered first quarter points to virtually put the game out of reach for the visiting Rams.“I like that we distributed the ball to a lot of different players,” said third -year Panther coach, Matt Davis.Besides Gilberry’s and Figueroa’s tallies, Jonathan Hafer scored on an 18 yard run, and David Conde caught a pass from Kennedy for a 71 yard TD with 53 seconds left in the first quarter.“We played sloppy at times, but we executed very well on several big plays,” said Davis.Meanwhile the Panther defense held the Rams to just four first downs in the half and defensive backs, Tyler Baez and Kyle Rusnak intercepted two of the three PV picks in the game to give their offense great field position. After an eight yard toss to Tristan Blasko and a 14 yard run by Josue Rodriguez, Kennedy hit Blasko again over the middle for a 33 yard TD with 1:34 left in the half to give PV a 33-0 lead.‘Hunter Kennedy (three TDs and 201 total passing yards) had a great game for us, running the offense and making big throws,” said Davis. “We expect to be a big play team this year with the athletes we have at the skill positions.”Figueroa’s 51-yard race to paydirt increased the Panther’s margin to 40 points with five minutes left in the third. For CMVT, running back, Savon Hill was their work horse, toting the rock 27 times for 126 yards including a fourth quarter TD run. Rams’ coach Mark Varner told his team after the game that he was proud of their effort.“We kept battling and there was no quit despite the score,” he said. That’s what we wanted from our team tonight. We need to stop the big plays and on offense, cut down on the minus yard plays and we will get better.”When asked what he wanted his team to accomplish next after the victory, PV coach Davis said, “Go 2-0.”The Panthers travel to play Hamburg next Friday.BAD PLAY – GOOD PLAY … Ram’s quarterback, Trevor Welsh was about to be sacked for a big loss on a pass play late in the game, but he escaped and turned the play into a 16 yard TD run.FLAGS FLYING EVERYWHERE … The game saw the teams combine for 13 penalties for 109 yards. Davis suggested that the reason for the sloppy play might be the fact that with the restructuring of the playoff calendar, teams played one scrimmage instead of the usual two pre-season practice games.LIGHTING UP THE NIGHT … Panther Valley unveiled its reconditioned scoreboard with new lighting, making the home team’s scoring even more apparent for the fans to see.
