Teen gets prison for camp assault

A Lehigh County teen was sentenced to a county prison term Thursday after previously pleading guilty to aggravated assault for an incident at a forestry camp in Kidder Township.

Austin Payne Gomez, 18, of Whitehall, was sentenced by Judge Joseph J. Matika to serve 10 to one day less 24 months in prison followed by one year of probation.According to state police at Fern Ridge, Gomez was among a group of juveniles at the camp that caused a disturbance when they were told that they would not be allowed to "ring in the New Year" because another client at the camp had caused a problem.During the course of the disturbance, which involved several caseworkers of the camp and the clients, Gomez was charged with assaulting a caseworkerin a bathroom area. It was reported thatthe victim suffered head and other injuries and still has not returned to work.On Thursday,the victim told the court he is still recovering from his injuries and continues to have headaches and other problems.Gomez told Matika, "I'm sorry for what I done. I did it as a juvenile."Gomez was 17 when the incident occurred.Matika referred to a presentence investigation report provided by the adult probation office stating, "A list of things in the PSI concerns me about you."He added, "You are an aggressor and have problems with authority. This doesn't bode well for you."Matika continued, "There is no justification for what you did here."Matika said one positive thing from the report is that Gomez cooperated with police during the investigation.In addition to the jail term, Matika ordered Gomez to get a mental health evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, supply a DNA sample, render 75 hours of community service when paroled, have no contact with any of the people involved in the incident, pay court costs of about $1,000, and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole and probation.He was given credit for 231 days spent in prison on the charge.
