Jurors deliberate in Silvonek slaying

Jurors in the Caleb Barnes case are currently deliberating whether to convict the 21-year-old soldier of the March 2015 murder of his girlfriend’s mother.

On Friday, arguments in the case concluded with dramatic, emotional testimony from Barnes and his alleged co-conspirator, Jamie Silvonek.Silvonek has already pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder for planning the deadly attack on her mother, 57-year-old Cheryl Silvonek. Now, a jury must decide whether Barnes will be convicted of the same charges. In closing arguments, prosecutors said that Barnes carried out a plan that he and Silvonek concocted to stab and kill Cheryl Silvonek while she sat in her car in the driveway outside their upscale home on a cul-de-sac in Upper Macungie Township. Barnes’ attorney argued that there was no physical evidence connecting him to the crime.Prosecutors say that in the early hours of March 15, 2015, Barnes stabbed Cheryl Silvonek in the neck while they were in her car, just after returning from a concert in Scranton.Friday morning, the defense surprised many by calling Silvonek to testify. She admitted to lying throughout the investigation, which the defense used as a basis to say that her most recent version of events was not credible. Jamie said that when she pleaded guilty, she was taking accountability for her actions.“I didn’t have any involvement in the physical act, but I believe everything I did was worse than the physical act itself,” the 15-year-old said.Barnes presented a version of events that was not previously reported. He said that after returning from the concert, Silvonek asked him to leave. He said that because it was 1 a.m., he fell asleep in his car outside the home. He said he was awakened by Jamie Silvonek, who said she had killed her mother after an argument. Barnes said he was obligated to help because he loved Jamie, and she told him that he was pregnant.
