Valley West shuts out Tamaqua

CONYNGHAM - Tamaqua's feisty 10-12-year-old all-star team couldn't match the strength of Valley West Thursday evening in the District 18 Little League Tournament.

Then again, not many teams can.Valley boasts pitching and a lineup that produced 10 hits, including home run power. All of that added up to a West 10-0 five-inning victory, which ousted Tamaqua from further play, while crowning the victors with a district title, along with a trip to the sectional tournament.Evan Coleman wasn't hiding that fact after watching his club give up eight runs in the late innings, knowing what the bottom line was able to produce."It's baseball, and they do it very well," said the Tams' skipper. "They have an outstanding pitcher in (Brett) Antolick, they can hit the long ball, and they are very sound in the way they play. They're a very good team, and I hope they go far."Surely Antolick was at the forefront the way he whipped his fastball and set up the table with his dipping curve. Antolick, a right-hander, struck out 15 batters, walking one and yielding two hits, one a second-inning double from Mason Moyer, and a third-inning single from Brian Hinkle."I have a lot of respect for that team, and that program," said Jeff Antolick, the Valley West skipper and the father of Brett. "You can't ever take any team lightly and we sure as heck weren't thinking like that, especially when you're going up against a quality team like Tamaqua."Never mind that Tamaqua fell in five innings, it was hanging around down 1-0 after an inning and still was battling through three innings looking at a 2-0 deficit. But its offense was on hold.Antolick scored the game's first run after walking and moving into scoring position on a wild pitch. But losing pitcher Hinkle wasn't giving sway, striking out a batter and getting a 4-3 groundout, before Brady Pettit slashed a 2-2 off-speed pitch to center for an RBI.Moyer lit a fuse for Tamaqua when he led off the second with a double, and scooted to third on an error off a batted ball from Timmy Fitzinger, who also took second on a steal. All of that stirred the pot with one out, but Antolick proceeded to strikeout the next two batters.Meanwhile, Valley West struck a chord in the third using a two-out rally, when Pettit singled and rode home on a Joe Skuba single. Then things came unraveled for Tamaqua an inning later. West put a five spot on the board, getting a three-run homer from Antolick, and a solo homer by Jacob Mummey. An inning later, West carried the momentum over in the home fifth, scoring three times as Pettit delivered a two-run single."We couldn't come up with (an) early hit," suggested Coleman. "We knew runs were going to be tough to come by the way (Antolick) pitches. But we had a great run."HIT PARADE … Valley West had five of its 10 hits from two players; Pettit with three, one of which was a double, and Antolick with two.GREAT EFFORT … Hinkle is only a 10-year-old player, but gave it a battle. He allowed only two runs over the first three innings, before West finally solved his tosses ... Antolick threw 76 pitches, 54 for strikes.SPORTSMANSHIP … Skipper Antolick could have sent runners home on passed balls late in the game, but held up and let his players hit.
