Bird Dogs bringing vintage sound to opera house

The Bird Dogs is a new band playing 1950s tunes in vintage button-ups and skinny black ties.

On July 22 the brother duo will entertain audiences at the Mauch Chunk Opera House. The Zmed brothers, Zachary and Dylan, are taking a page right out of the Everly Brother's music catalog with their stage presence, acoustic guitar playing and vocal harmonizing. The duo is backed by Burleigh Drummond, Branden Stroup and Bertrand Velky, to round out the musical sound. The Los Angeles-based siblings have been playing music together for four years in various projects until the idea for the "Everly Brothers Experience" came to them."I've been playing electric guitar since I was 12. My brother joined the band after he finished college and we noticed we sang well together," said eldest brother Zachary."It's been a lot of learning to actually play acoustic together. Our dynamic is unique. It's a blessing and a curse," Zachary said. The band has played 17 shows so far and according to Zachary audiences have been delighted."It's an emotional experience for people. At one show a woman said she was dancing with her deceased husband in the back of the venue all night. It was really validating."The Everly Brothers were a country-influenced rock 'n' roll duo known for steel-string guitar and vocal harmonies. Isaac Donald "Don" Everly and little brother Phillip were elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986 and the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001. The brothers had 35 Billboard Top-100 singles and hold the record for the most top 100 singles by any duo.Their most well-known hits include "Cathy's Clown," "All I Have To Do Is Dream" and "Bye-Bye Love"."The Everly Brothers are one of those groups that are overlooked," said Zachary. "They influence so many artists, but they get overlooked by the younger generation.""Don Everly was a great acoustic and rhythm player. It's been challenging to learn and play their music. It's meticulous in the proficiency of their playing. Considering the time period when they recorded in the late 50s. They all had to record around one microphone. It's amazing," Zachary said.According to Zachary the family traveled to the Pocono region years ago with their father, who performed music and acted in plays across the county but this will be the first time they play in Jim Thorpe."Audiences can expect us to play the hits and some of the deeper cuts that we love. We'll be playing early rock 'n' roll, playing our instruments and singing our butts off," said the eldest brother."We're just being ourselves and honor them."Coming upFriday at 8 p.m. it's Indie-guitarist and singer/songwriter Willy Porter and Carmen Nickerson.Porter has been turning first-time listeners into die-hard fans for more than two decades. He and Nickerson bring their brand of righteous indie-folk for a night of high-test tunes and tons of fun.Saturday at 8 p.m. its Incendio. In both Italian and Spanish, incendio means fire - a fitting name for a musical group whose sound is all about energy, exploration, and passion.Next Thursday it's the Ruf's Blues Caravan Blues Sisters, beginning at 8 p.m.Now in its 12th year, the Blues Caravan is a touring showcase for the hottest young acts on the Ruf label. This time meet Ina Forsman (Finland) and Layla Zoe (Canada).
