Berks man pleads to corruption charge

A Berks County man who was charged with sending sexual text messages to a teenage girl in Lansford entered a guilty plea to a reduced charge on Friday in Carbon County court.

Joselito A. Mendez, 18, of Bernville, pleaded before Judge Joseph J. Matika to the corruption charge, a misdemeanor two. In exchange for the plea, charges of sexual abuse of a child and two counts of unlawful contact with a minor were dropped. Mendez got a break when the district attorney's office agreed to let the corruption charge he pleaded to not include any references of a sexual matter. Because of that the charge does not fall under the provisions of Megan's Law, meaning Mendez did not have to submit to an evaluation by the state sexual assessment board.According to an affidavit of probable cause, a woman came to the police station on Feb. 20 with a Dragon Touch tablet and told police her 15-year-old daughter had been exchanging lewd comments and images with a person she believed to be an adult Hispanic male.Police officer Charles W. Horvath found on the tablet that on Feb. 17 someone using the screen name Jay Prince exchanged several text messages, pictures and videos with the girl, including images of a naked man engaging in a sexual act.The girl sent pictures of herself seminude and engaging in a sexual act.The mother said she believed Jay Prince may be from Berks County and that her daughter may have met him while she was in foster care.On March 23 police posted a photo of Jay Prince's screen image on their Facebook page in an effort to identify him.On March 25 a tip came in that led police to Mendez. Police learned Mendez's Facebook page had the same photo of himself as his screen persona. The officer ran a check with Pennsylvania Department of Transportation on Mendez's driver's license and sent a letter asking him to come to the station for an interview. On April 5 Mendez called him and admitted exchanging the images. He said the girl was his girlfriend and that they had known each other since middle school and that she had told him she was 16, about to turn 17.The DA's office said the victim and her family agreed to the plea bargain.Matika place him on probation for a year and ordered he render 50 hours of community service, pay court costs of about $1,000, pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation and have no contact with the victim.
