Update: Slatington deaths ruled as murder-suicide

The Lehigh County Coroner's Office said the deaths of two men in a home near Slatington on Wednesday night was a murder-suicide.

Joseph S. Sommer, 48, of Northampton, was pronounced dead at 11:54 p.m., and Harry R. Bortz, 34, of Northampton, was pronounced dead at 11:55 p.m. by Deputy Coroner Craig Hanzl at a residence in the 6700 block of Route 873, Slatington, Washington Township.

Sommer's cause of death is a gunshot wound to the body. The manner of death was ruled homicide.

Bortz's cause of death is a gunshot wound to the body. The manner of death was ruled suicide.

Both autopsies were performed Thursday morning.

The incident occurred after 10:30 p.m. Wednesday in a residence in the 6700 block of Route 873, Washington Township.

The Lehigh County Coroner's Office and the Pennsylvania State Police are conducting the investigation, with the assistance of the Lehigh County District Attorney's Office and the Homicide Task Force.
