Former Palmerton man dies after being struck by car near Phila

A college professor with ties to Palmerton died Saturday evening after being struck by a car after leaving a movie theater.

David Dunbar, 51, of Bowes Lane, Exeter Township, Reading, died at the Paoli Hospital in Chester County, from injuries sustained earlier in the evening.According to the philly.com website Dunbar, a professor of biology at Cabrini College, in Radnor Township, Delaware County, was hit by a car as he tried to cross Lancaster Avenue in Wayne, during a downpour. Police said Dunbar was hit after leaving the Anthony Wayne movie theater near Lancaster and Wayne avenues about 9 p.m. Dunbar did not attempt to cross at the corner crosswalk, Radnor Township police said. Police did not identify the driver of the vehicle, who remained at the scene and did not see Dunbar in time to stop. The driver was unharmed and cooperating, police added.Dunbar has been a professor at Cabrini since 2001. He was a 1983 graduate of Palmerton High School, attended Lycoming College, Lehigh University and post doctorate work at Yale Medical School.According to his obituary he enjoyed coaching football, fly fishing, and weight lifting.In a statement Cabrini College said, "David was a pillar of our community and the Cabrini family. He was dedicated to our students, to academic research, to community engagement, and to our mission. David will be sorely missed by all."His research projects included studying a 250-year-old microbe; genes involved in mouse mammary gland development; and viral genome sequencing, according to the website story.In addition to this teaching duties, Dunbar was Cabrini's faculty athletic representative, overseeing academic issues involving student athletes.He is survived by his parents, Melvin F. and Linda L. (Miner) Dunbar of Palmerton; a daughter Megan; sons Kyle and Eric; brothers Richard A., and wife, Kerry, of Terre Haute, Indiana, Jamie A, and wife Heather, of Tamaqua..
