Polk concerned over increased traffic flow

Polk Township supervisors approved a motion Monday evening to request that Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to conduct an updated traffic study for the intersection of Routes 209 and Silver Spring Boulevard.

"We will have the increase in truck traffic from Eldred Township and there is an increase in truck traffic to Palmerton," said Chairman Brian Ahner. "I watched a truck try to make that turn today and he had to stop because he couldn't continue. It's only going to get worse."Last month, Polk Township requested to intervene before the Eldred Township Zoning Hearing Board as they conduct hearings into the application of Nestle Waters NA to extract spring water in the township. The Nestle application calls for two water tankers per hour to pass through the township between the hours of 6 a.m. and 11 p.m. seven days per week.The supervisors also approved a motion to have planning solicitor Dave Martino assist special counsel Jerry Hanna to properly research and brief the township on its standing before the Eldred zoning board.In other township business the supervisors awarded a contract to Hanson Aggregates for paving Hideaway Hill Road and Eagle Drive in the amount of $99,905.65. The next closest bid was about $13,000 higher.The seal coating was awarded to Schiffer Bituminous for $49,793.94. There were actually two identical bids for the project and supervisor Carl Heckman flipped a coin to determine which offer was accepted. The other bidder on the project was Asphalt Maintenance Systems.The township will be adding security cameras to township building and the transfer station at a cost of $4,326. The transfer station portion will be paid for out of the recycling grant.The township will also extend their contract for roadside weed spraying with DBI Services at a rate of $3,395 per year for three years.Joan McKinsey was appointed to the Veterans Memorial Commission.On a different note, Ahner, who is also the township roadmaster, noted that the road crews have been finding a lot more garbage dumped on the sides of the roads in the township.
