Monroe man gets prison in drug case

A Monroe County man was sentenced to a county prison term Monday in Carbon County court on drug charges.

Matthew John Kozero, 24, of Gilbert, was sentenced by President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II to serve three to 23 months in prison on two counts of possession of a controlled substance. He previously pleaded to the charges.Kozero was arrested by Palmerton police on March 12, 2015, at Third Street and Delaware Avenue following a traffic stop. Police found 63 packs of heroin in the vehicle along with cocaine. In a plea bargain with the district attorney's office, a charge of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance was dropped.Kozero told the court, "I'm trying everything a person can do to take responsibility for what I've done." He added, "I'm sorry for all the harm and damage I've done to may family." He said he was trying to get help for his drug addiction.Nanovic said the court noted that Kozero was on parole when he was arrested on the charges from a sentence in Lehigh County.Nanovic also ordered Kozero to get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use, pay court costs of about $1,000, and pay a $50 per month supervision fee when on parole.He will begin the jail term at 10 a.m. Friday.
