Panel considers $160K settlement with beaten student

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Officials are considering paying $160,000 to a student who was beaten by an assistant principal in Philadelphia's Frankford High School.

The School Reform Commission on Thursday is set to approve the settlement with Josue Ortega if he drops a federal civil rights lawsuit that he filed in 2013.According to the lawsuit, Ortega said he suffered a neck sprain and spasms, a concussion, headaches and other ailments after the assistant principal, who weighs 220 pounds, attempted to grab his hat off his head and his cellphone in 2012.The assistant principal was later laid off.The Philadelphia Inquirer (http://bit.ly/1WU4BSw ) reports the deal calls for Ortega to be paid $80,000 within 60 days of the vote and $80,000 on or before July 31.---Information from: The Philadelphia Inquirer,
