Booster club, students speak at Northwestern meeting

The Northwestern Lehigh baseball booster club asked the school board to consider keeping the club in operation.

David Laudenslager, baseball booster president, said he thought the school and club were working well together. Laudenslager asked for 90 days before any action was taken to try to work out the details."We acted within guidelines and everything is done by vote. We have to support the kids and school," he said at a recent board meeting.Joe Reiter, a former board member, said we need to support the booster clubs.Club advisers and students came to the meeting to discuss their projects.Adviser Lisa Opolsky brought editor-in-chief Mikaela Koenig to talk about the yearbook.Fifty students are on the yearbook staff.The book has color photos, with 30 pictures coming to life with a phone.Key Club students are Jonathan Blaine and Ryan Hippensteel, members of a youth Kiwanis Club, said the blood drives are one of the largest projects of the club.Five years ago the blood drive opened to the public but 90 percent of donations are still from students. The latest drive increased by 18.8 percent.Other projects are Pennies for Patients, flower and plant sales, Save the Tigers and the food banks in Northern Lehigh and Lowhill.The student representative report by Josephine Breidinger said AP exams are beginning May 3. Eighth-graders will visit the high school on May 5 for a brief overview of life at the high school.The board congratulated Gavin Mengel, who won a silver medal for CNC Technician at the state SkillsUSA competition. He is in the precision machining lab.The high school debate team went 2-1 in the semifinal round. Chris Parker, Brandon Segan, Evan Hufnagle and Sommer Farthing were on the semifinal team.The Interact Club, a youth Rotary Club, recently held a floor hockey tournament with five teams participating.Proceeds will go toward the purchase of a shelter box which has supplies needed to get a family settled including the shelter, after an emergency.A wellness fair was held during school to educate students on drug, alcohol and distracted driving awareness.The Science Olympiad team will compete in the state competition at Juniata University.
