Woman in fatal crash took Valium

When a 64-year-old man was struck and killed by a pickup on First Street in Lehighton last November, the driver of the vehicle that struck him had a high dose of Valium in her system.

She also tested positive for marijuana, police said.Jennifer Roxanne Coleman, 44, of 15 N. Shore Drive, Albrightsville is facing various charges for the death of Vincent John Smith of Lehighton. Police said Smith was struck by an F-150 truck that Coleman was driving. They stopped her vehicle about five miles from the accident scene thanks to a witness to the fatal crash, who following her and relayed her whereabouts to a police dispatcher.Details of the incident were disclosed during a preliminary hearing conducted Wednesday morning before District Judge Edward M. Lewis of Jim Thorpe.She is charged with homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence of a controlled substance, accidents involving death or personal injury, not being properly licensed, flight to avoid apprehension, driving while under the influence, reckless driving, homicide by vehicle and involuntary manslaughter.Lewis ordered that bail be continued at $1 million cash. She is presently incarcerated in the Carbon County Correctional Facility.A pretrial conference is scheduled for June 14 in the district attorney's office at the courthouse in Jim Thorpe. She is also scheduled to go on trial June 6 for drug charges that occurred last April.When her vehicle was stopped by police, her speech was slurred and she had trouble standing."I believed she was under the influence of something and I did not detect the odor of alcohol at all," testified Sgt. Joseph Lawrence of the Lehighton Police Department.The investigating officer is Bruce Broyles, who said he arrived at the scene of the accident about a minute after being dispatched. The incident happened in the 100 block of South First Street. He was on North First Street when the call came from the Carbon County communications dispatcher.Broyles said when he arrived on the scene he observed a man lying in the roadway, "not breathing, not responsive," and bleeding. There also was damage to a parked vehicle and two parking meters.He was told the person responsible had left the scene.After Coleman was apprehended, a blood test was conducted and the results indicated multiple compounds found, Broyles said. The highest was diazepam, which according to websites is generic for Valium.Her driver's license was also expired as of Sept. 29, 2015, Broyles said.Witness reportJeremy Green, 19, of Lehighton, was behind the pickup truck that struck Smith, who was bent over and looking inside a car, talking to the occupants at the time, he said.He said the vehicle that hit Smith "was swerving all over the road." He said he was only a car length behind the pickup truck.He stopped briefly and when he saw there were people taking care of Smith, he told them he would proceed after the truck to get the license number.While he followed Coleman's vehicle, a passenger relayed information including location to the comm center dispatcher.He said Coleman turned on Iron Street to Second, then went out Ashtown Road to Route 443, right at the stop light at Walmart onto Frederick's Grove Road, and then onto Route 902 when police pulled her over in the vicinity of the New England Motor Freight terminal.Green said the pickup "was all over the road and going through stop signs."When asked about his actions, he said, "I was concerned that the person who was hit would get help and the person who was responsible would get caught."Lawrence testified that when Coleman got out of the pickup truck, "She was definitely not capable of safe driving."Coleman told police the vehicle was owned by someone else.In April, Jim Thorpe police stopped Coleman as part of a routine traffic stop during an aggressive driving detail on Route 903, which led to a large drug discovery. During that incident, Coleman had 15 prepackaged bags of suspected crack cocaine, 10 bags of suspected heroin and several items of drug paraphernalia.Police also seized over $11,710 in cash from Coleman's purse.Coleman, at that time, was out on bail for other drug charges.
