Day of Prayer
The National Day of Prayer event will be held in Tamaqua at noon on May 5.Hosted by Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church, the prayer gathering will be held in front of Tamaqua Borough Hall, 320 E. Broad St.People of all faiths are welcome to attend and pray for the nation and its leaders.This year's theme is "Wake Up America," a call for people to "return to the God of our fathers in reverence for his holy name."Drug disposal dayThe Tamaqua Police Department is participating in the 2016 National Drug Take Back Day on Saturday.Residents may take their old or no longer needed prescription drugs to the station, where they will then be disposed of in a responsible matter.The goal of National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day is to provide a safe, convenient and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medications.An officer will be at the Tamaqua Police Station, rear 320 E. Broad St. (borough hall) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.Rush-Ryan SeniorsThe Rush, Ryan and Delano Senior Citizens Inc. met April 19 at the Ryan Township Fire Company in Barnesville with 37 members in attendance. The business session was conducted by President Eleanor Schmerfeld. Chaplain Kathleen Valentine offered the invocation "There's Some of God in Everyone."Roger and Dolores Walck were welcomed back and Pat Brown was welcomed to the group. A moment of silence was observed in memory of Aseneth Horan.Several trips were added to the list of upcoming events: April 26 to the Mohegan Sun Casino; May 5 to a dinner and show at Penn's Peak; Aug. 16 to the Dutch Way Family Restaurant in Myerstown.Readings were offered by Ruthann Feane and Shirley Becker.The group meets the second and fourth Tuesday of every month at the fire company. Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join.Zion LewistownPastor Jim Williams will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. worship service this Gideon Sunday in Zion Church of the Lewistown Valley. Sunday school classes meet at 9:15 a.m.Also on Sunday, the annual congregational meeting will be held following the worship service.Bible study sessions are held at 12:30 p.m. Thursdays.St. John LutheranThe Rev. Phyllis Wolford will officiate at this Sunday's 9:15 a.m. worship service in St. John's Lutheran Church. the service will include Holy Communion.Also on Sunday, Confirmation and Sunday school classes will meet at 10:30 a.m.Next week's activities will include: Monday, worship and music committee meets at 6:30 p.m.; Thursday, angel choir practice is at 6 p.m., shepherd choir rehearses at 6:30 p.m., chancel choir meets at 7:30 p.m.St. Peter's UnionSunday worship services in St. Peter's Union Church in Mantzville are held at 9 a.m. The service will include Holy Communion and a collection for the Hunger Walk event.
