Man charged in Carbon robberies, police chase

A man charged in a string of Monroe County armed robberies has been charged with a slew of violations for leading police on a chase and robbing two stores in Carbon County.

Kyle Heim, 34, of Albrightsville, is charged with more than 100 counts of driving violations; seven counts of recklessly endangering another person; five counts of agricultural vandalism; two counts of simple assault; two counts of aggravated assault; and one count each of fleeing or attempting to elude police officer; careless driving; reckless driving, and theft.Heim remains incarcerated in the Monroe County Correctional Facility in lieu of $100,000 straight bail.According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by Trooper Christopher Tomlinson of the Fern Ridge State Police:While patrolling in the area of Route 534 and Jonas Mountain Road on April 3, Tomlinson saw a black Ford F-150 stopped in the roadway of Jonas Mountain Road, Penn Forest Township.The vehicle was also the subject of an attempted welfare check on a child by other Fern Ridge units. The driver fled a residence before police could contact him.Tomlinson initiated his overhead lights, and the vehicle began to drive away and made a U-turn in a front yard of a residence on Jonas Mountain Road. Tomlinson identified the driver as Heim, who has multiple warrants.Tomlinson pursued his truck, as Heim made multiple turns without utilizing its turn signals; passed multiple vehicles on the left; drove at oncoming traffic causing motorists to swerve to avoid a collision; drove in the opposite lane of travel; drove through multiple agricultural fields; failed to stop at stop signs; drove through several yards; and drove head-on at a marked PSP Lehighton patrol car operated by Trooper Mark Bower.The car slid off the roadway into a tree on Turkey Hill Road in Eldred Township, overturning.The F-150 then continued on Turkey Hill Road, and police lost sight of it.At 2:30 p.m. April 4, Tomlinson interviewed a witness who said he was talking to Heim at the intersection of Route 534 and Jonas Mountain Road when Heim fled. The witness identified Heim as the driver of the vehicle when the pursuit began, and said he told Heim he was not supposed to be driving the truck.Carbon robberiesHeim also faces charges for an armed robbery at the Dollar General Store along Route 903 in Penn Forest Township.He was video-arraigned Monday afternoon by District Judge Ed Lewis. Heim faces charges of robbery, recklessly endangering another person and other related charges.He is being held in prison in lieu of $20,000 bail straight for that matter.Heim is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing before Lewis at 4:30 p.m. May 4.According to courr papers filed by Trooper Daniel Marotta of the Fern Ridge State Police:At 10:59 a.m. April 11, Marotta was dispatched to the Dollar General store along Route 903 in Penn Forest Township, for a report of an armed robbery that occurred and the suspect had since fled the scene.Marotta interviewed the Dollar General store manager, who said that at 9:30 a.m. that day, a man came into the store and approached the register where she was working. The man then lifted his sweatshirt, showed her a handgun tucked in his pants and told her to give him all the money in her register. The manager said she gave him all the paper money in the register, which came to $100. The man took the money and fled in a black Ford F150 pickup truck, southbound on Route 903.Just before the robbery at the Dollar General store in Penn Forest, other robberies in Kidder Township, Carbon County, and Chestnuthill Township, Monroe County, were reported to state police at Fern Ridge and Kidder Township police. The suspect’s description and vehicle were the same.Heim is also charged in a robbery on April 10 at the Dollar General store in Ross Township, Monroe County.On April 11, Heim was located in Walnutport, and taken into custody. He was transported back to the Lehighton state police station, where he confessed to robbing the Dollar General in Penn Forest.
