What is a makerspace?

Basically, a makerspace is a community-operated workspace for people with common interests. They function as centers for learning and knowledge sharing through workshops, studios, presentations, lectures and hands-on training.

The main income for many makerspaces is a membership fee, although sponsorships are also usually available, and many have been formed as nonprofit groups. In Tamaqua, a makerspace has been created at 45 Market St. Known as the Seed House, the venture is the creation of artists Kevin and Lauren (Hamby) Smith after the couple spent several years at Stonehedge Gardens in South Tamaqua.Smith says the Seed House is designed to offer creative consultations. Rooms are available for weekend or weeklong stays, and every Saturday there is a Taste of Tamaqua event, featuring the culinary creations of Chef Hiram Quintana. Events also feature a presentation by an artist, such as recent evenings with sculptor John McCoy and artist Devin Devine.First Saturdays usually feature special music. For more information on the Seed House, email
