Schuylkill bridge work planned

Three Schuylkill County bridges in Walker and Hubley townships and Girardville Borough are getting face-lifts.

Commissioners on Wednesday approved a $22,300 contract with Alfred Benesch and Company for the engineering design for the paving, guide rail upgrade, deck patching, and construction coordination the maintenance project for county bridges 39, 81 and 141.Bridge 39 is in Walker Township, on Atlas Road, Bridge 81 is in Girardville, on Williams Street, and Bridge 141 is in Hubley Township, on Church Road.The work consists of milling off the current wearing surface and repaving, make some deck repairs, and upgrading the guide rail to current PennDOT standards, said county engineer Lisa Mahall.The cost for the design is $15,500 and the construction coordination is estimated at $6,800.In a related matter, commissioners approved a memorandum of understanding with Norwegian Township to use a township-owned road as a detour during the repair of county bridge 200.The detour is expected to begin in June and last through August.It will have vehicles traveling over a culvert on Maple Avenue.The understanding is that the county will leave the culvert in as good condition as it was before the detour, and perform any work or pay any costs required to restore it as soon as possible after the bridge project ends.Also, the courthouse will be closed next Tuesdayin observance of the primary election.Commissioners will meet next at 6 p.m. Thursday.
