Vandals rip up Tamaqua field

Athletic Director Mike Hromyak said he was disheartened Wednesday morning when he discovered someone had vandalized the Tamaqua Area School District softball field.

He posted photos on Twitter morning showing deep tire marks ripping up the outfield."Angry in the Athletic Office today!!" Hromyak tweeted. "Damage done to our SB field:..if anyone knows anything LET ME KNOW!!"Hromyak said the vandalism occurred sometime after a varsity/junior varsity softball doubleheader with Lehighton, which ended around 7:45 p.m. Tuesday.Hromyak said that when the maintenance crew went to prepare the field Wednesday morning, they saw the vandalism done to the softball field."Obviously somebody got up onto our softball field in a vehicle and drove around on our outfield, did some doughnuts, did some vehicular damage," Hromyak said.In an effort to remedy the situation, Hromyak said the crew got some top soil, fixed the ruts Wednesday afternoon, and planted some seeds."Now, unfortunately, our outfield is a mess, and it's a shame," he said. "I feel bad for our kids, and our maintenance staff that works so hard to maintain our athletic facilities."Hromyak said the field in its current condition is "safe and playable."The softball team's next home game is scheduled for Monday, Hromyak said."We have dirt instead of grass on our outfield thanks to whoever decided to do this," he said. "It's very frustrating, disheartening."Hromyak said anyone with information is asked to contact him at mhromyak@tamaqua.k12.pa.us.
