Schuylkill seeks grant for upgrades at lake

Schuylkill County is hoping to polish its crown jewel, Sweet Arrow Lake.

County commissioners on Wednesday approved a request from Drew Kline of the Department of Parks & Recreation to apply for a $250,300 grant from the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.The grant requires a 50 percent match. The Friends of Schuylkill Parks and Recreation have pledged $100,000, and the county would contribute the remaining $150,300.The money would provide Sweet Arrow Lake, in Pine Grove, with a new pavilion, flush restrooms and a playground.It would also provide money for the grading and resurfacing of the waterfall parking lot.In other matters, commissioners hired TKO Cleaning Services of Pottsville to clean the Human Services Complex at 410-420 N. Centre St. in Pottsville.TKO was the sole bidder for the $64,800 three-year contract.Also on Wednesday, commissioners approved a five-year block grant contract between the Office of Senior Services and the state Department of Aging.The grant runs from July 1 to June 30, 2021, and provides $5,011,304 each year.In a special Prison Board meeting that followed the commissioners' meeting Wednesday, the board agreed to offer the job of lieutenant correctional officer to Tom Forte. Forte has worked for the Rush Township police department.
