Towamensing discusses Blue Mountain's pipeline plans

The PennEast/UGI pipeline will be used for a gas-fueled electric generator at Blue Mountain Resort. The electricity will produce power for a planned water park."This project is not consistent with the goals and objectives of the Carbon County Comprehensive Plan and Greenway Plan," said Paul Shinsec about the pipeline.He said the townships should act now to request maps showing temporary access roads, equipment storage facilities and township roads that will be used. Shinsec said the townships should be sure there is sufficient bonding to pay for damage to roads.The 187-mile pipeline will cross 87 streams and 53 wetland areas. Blue Mountain received a $500,000 grant of taxpayer money and Shinsec wondered why it should have use of public money.Other newsRick Moyer of Stagecoach Road West said the road has been raised so often in front of his house that it is higher than his porch. Road inspections are scheduled between March 9 and 11, said Supervisor Penny Kleintop.A written decision about the fire company audit should be in township hands by this week. Dale Kirk will be asked to attend a meeting. The company and township will review the audit individually and then at a joint meeting.Kirk Summa was approved as the auditor for township records.Fire police were approved to work at the Raising the House race on March 19; the Carbon County Fair, Aug. 8-13; and on May 7 for a Blue Mountain Health System 5K race.A workshop was scheduled to discuss the driveway ordinance at 7 p.m. Monday.The road crew has been working on the dirt and gravel road project on Forest Street and doing maintenance on equipment.Historical commissionKarl Rolappe, president of the township historical commission, introduced Steve Holmes and said he wanted to work with the commission even though he lives 200 feet outside the township. He wants to do archiving and oral history.Supervisors approved it.Anyone in the township is eligible to become a member.Volunteers are needed to continue sorting papers from the attic.Engineer Greg Haas said he received preliminary plans for dugouts at the recreation fields but they are insufficient.The fire company responded to a motor vehicle accident, fire call, trees across the road and a brush fire.The fire company wants an ordinance about false alarms. Solicitor Tom Nanovic said there is a state law. It will be investigated because the company gets one or two a month.The Girl Scout Troop that does work around the township building asked for a donation to send Girl Scout cookies to troops. They will receive $250.Bruce Reiner, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the township tax collector, asked for a donation to help with the cost of bringing a small version of the Vietnam Memorial wall to Palmerton Park in July. The township will donate $200.Supervisor Tom Newman said Community Emergency Response Team classes will be held April 4, 11, 18 and 25 and Sept. 12, 19, 26 and Oct. 3. All four classes must be taken, but they can be completed at either of the two sessions.The classes prepare people to help in an emergency.He said the school needs a generator so it can be used for an emergency shelter.Howard Williams asked if anyone was out to check the water problem at Hazlewood and Stagecoach roads. It will be looked at during the road inspection. He also said drains on James Street are blocked.
