Carbon County Judge Joseph J. Matika sentenced four defendants who previously pleaded guilty to driving under the influence.

Jay M. Miller,22, of Lehighton, was sentenced to serve 4 to 60 months in the county prison plus a fine of $1,500, and his license was suspended for 18 months.Miller was arrested on June 9, 2015, along Route 248 at Parryville by state police at Lehighton after being involved in a crash. A test showed the presence of a controlled substance.Miller is currently in jail on probation/parole petitions filed by the adult probation office and is serving a 90 days to 12 months prison term for the violations. Matika ruled his new sentence would run concurrent with the probation term.He was also ordered to render 100 hours of community service when released on parole and zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use. He was granted work release privileges.Susan Kennedy, 52, of Philadelphia was sentenced to serve 72 hours to 6 months in jail, a fine of $1,000 and one-year license suspension.She was arrested on May 22, 2015, along Fourth Street by Lehighton police. A test showed the presence of a controlled substance.She began the jail term immediately.Gregory Andrew Shive, 21, of Albrightsville, was sentenced to serve 72 hours to 6 months in jail, a fine of $1,000, one-year license suspension and must render 25 hours of community service.He was arrested on May 8, 2015, in the area of Maury and Long Run roads in Franklin Township by state police at Lehighton. A test showed the presence of a controlled substance.Shive also pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia and was placed on probation for a year, concurrent with the DUI sentence and must render an additional 25 hours of community service.David Edwin Alberswerth, 50, of Dickson City, Lackawanna County, was sentenced to serve 30 days to 6 months in prison, a fine of $750, one-year license suspension and render 25 hours of community service.He was arrested on Jan. 26, 2014, along Spring Mountain Road in Banks Township by state police at Hazleton. A test showed 0.18 BAC.He was given credit for 28 days spent in an inpatient rehabilitation facility. He will begin serving the two days remaining on his sentence at 7 p.m. Feb. 26.Each defendant must also pay court costs of about $1,000 and a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole.
