A total of seven defendants in pending driving under the influence cases entered guilty pleas in Carbon County court recently.

Judge Steven R. Serfass accepted pleas from the following:Artur Grinberg, 56, of Philadelphia, was arrested on July 13, 2015, along Route 209 in Franklin Township by state police at Lehighton. A test showed the presence of a controlled substance. He also pleaded to driving while under suspension-DUI related.On the DUI charge Serfass sentenced him to serve 90 days to five years in the county prison, pay a fine of $1,500, license suspended for 18 months and render 100 of community service when released on parole. On the suspension count he was sentenced to serve 45-90 days in jail, but must serve the full 90 days and pay a fine of $500. The jail terms run concurrently.He will begin the jail term at 9 a.m. March 1.Joseph John McHale, 59, of Scranton, was arrested on March 15, 2015, along Route 903 in Penn Forest Township by state police at Lehighton. A test showed the presence of a controlled substance.Sentencing was deferred so McHale could obtain a drug and alcohol evaluation and also apply for placement in the Intermediate Punishment Program - house arrest.Peter Balch Sickley Jr., 49, of Albrightsville, was arrested on Aug. 19, 2014, along Stony Mountain Road in Penn Forest Township by state police at Fern Ridge. A test showed 0.30 BAC. He previously was placed in the Accelerated Rehabilitation Disposition probation program but was revoked for violating conditions.Serfass placed him on probation for 6 months and ordered he pay a fine of $300, get a drug and alcohol evaluation and render 25 hours of community service.John Gregory Andrews, 55, of Palmerton, was arrested by state police at Lehighton in the parking lot area of Palmerton High School in Lower Towamensing Township. A test showed 0.30 BAC.Serfass placed him on probation for six months and ordered he pay a fine of $300 and render 25 hours of community service.Nicholas J. Cantelmi, 26, of Jim Thorpe, pleaded in two separate cases. He was arrested on June 21, 2015, along Berwick Street by Beaver Meadows police. The other arrest occurred on Dec. 5, 2014, along Wild Creek Road in Penn Forest Township by state police at Lehighton. Tests in both cases revealed the presence of a controlled substance.Sentencing was deferred so Cantelmi could obtain a drug and alcohol evaluation and apply for the IPP.Shaun Austin Mann, 21, of Lehighton, was arrested on Jan. 12, 2015, by Lehighton police along First Street. A test showed the presence of a controlled substance.Sentencing was deferred so Mann could obtain a drug and alcohol evaluation.Christopher Matthew Smith, 36, of Palmyra, Lebanon County, was arrested on Oct. 13, 2014, along East Alley in Lehighton by state police at Lehighton. A test showed the presence of a controlled substance. He also pleaded to one count of endangering the welfare of a child. He had his 3½-year-old son in his vehicle at the time.Sentencing was deferred so he could obtain a drug and alcohol evaluation.All defendants sentenced must also pay court costs of about $1,000 and a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole.
