A report to determine how water got into customers' gas tanks at a Carbon County gas station is due by Thursday.

As they would any other day, on Tuesday customers went to the BZ Bee Food Store at Route 895 and Lincoln Street in Bowmanstown to fill their gas tanks.But, instead of filling their cars with gasoline, it turns out their fuel tanks were filled with water, according to Colleen Connolly, Department of Environmental Protection agency regional spokeswoman.Connolly said DEP received a complaint Wednesday morning from a customer who went to the BZ Bee.The customer said her car had stalled, and her mechanic told her there was water in it, Connolly said."We only got a complaint from one (individual)," Connolly said. "There was likely more than one; there could have been as many as 10 to 12."Connolly said an inspector from DEP's environmental cleanup program conducted a Compliance Evaluation Inspection on Wednesday and discovered about 7½ inches, 368 gallons, of water had been in the regular gasoline tank but had all been pumped out."It had been determined that heavy precipitation (heavy rains) caused the water to leak into the tank," she said. "So, now the owner of the tank must perform a tank tightness report."Connolly said the tank tightness report will determine such factors as how tight the valves are, the lines going into the tank, and if they see any leaks in the tank.Of the two tanks, one diesel and the other gasoline, Connolly said a small amount of water was detected in the diesel tank, though it was not measurable."They will perform a tank tightness report on both of them," she said. "At some point, both tanks will be out of order."Connolly said, "we're in the process of issuing a notice of violation to the gas station owners for the 12 violations that we discovered.""In the process of our inspector doing his inspection, he discovered about a dozen violations of their underground storage tank permit," she said. "They've admitted water got into the tanks."As for how exactly the financial costs will be decided?"Our understanding is (the costs) would be between the car owner and the gas station owner," she said. "One complained that her car had stopped working."Connolly said that the owners of the gas station have been "extremely cooperative."She said the gas station remains open.Contacted Thursday, BZ Bee Food Store co-owner Panna Patel, declined to comment because she said she was waiting on customers.
