Orioles donate to area police departments

The Lehighton Orioles Nest 183 donated a total of $4,000 to area police departments during its monthly breakfast Sunday.

Orioles officer Tom Silvonek said the Lehighton, Mahoning and Franklin police departments each received $1,000, as did the state police Camp Cadet program.State Rep. Doyle Heffley was on hand for the donations, which he said are a prime example of the positive intentions of Pennsylvania's small games of chance law, revised in 2012.The law states that at least 70 percent of the proceeds made from small games of chance must be used for public interest purposes. Many of the departments intend to use the money for equipment purchases.Lehighton Police Chief Brian Biechy and Franklin Township Police Chief Thomas Beltz were on hand to accept their donations.Patrolman Matthew Bender, of the state police Lehighton barracks, represented Camp Cadet. The weeklong camp, open to boys and girls between the ages of 12 to 14, is designed to give young people a better understanding of law enforcement activities in an atmosphere of an actual state police training school.
