Game on! Local Panther and Bronco fans ready for Super Bowl

It’ll be claws versus hoofs on the turf of Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, this Sunday for Super Bowl 50.

The Carolina Panthers will face the Denver Broncos at 6:35 p.m., Eastern time. This will be Denver’s eighth Super Bowl appearance while Carolina is playing in its second game. Denver overtook New England for the AFC Championship while Carolina beat Arizona to represent the NFC Championship.“I bleed orange and blue,” said die-hard Broncos fan Sheila Green Andrews of Walnutport. Andrews’ love for the team dates back to the ’80s before she had ever seen a game until one fall afternoon.“I wasn’t into football. I was bored one Sunday and started watching a Broncos game. And then I saw John Elway was quarterback and thought, this guy can really play football. I’ve been a fan ever since.”Andrews saved up her pennies for years to fly to Denver’s Sports Authority Field.“I finally flew to Denver last year with daughter and grandson to see them play against the Raiders. They lost, but it was still the best thing I ever did.”Brenden Bugge of Tamaqua has been a Panthers fan for most of his life. To show his support for his team he drove over 550 miles one way last week to watch the Panthers rip up the field against the Cardinals.“I’ve been a fan for over 13 years. I know everything about the team,” he said. According to Bugge, it would be a dream come true to see Carolina take home the championship ring Sunday night. To ensure that the Broncos win the big game, Andrews will wear good-luck charms while watching at home with family and a Broncos cake.“Every Sunday I wear the same T-shirt and sweatpants,” she said. “One year I didn’t wear the T-shirt from Super Bowl ’98 and they lost.”Panthers fan Brett Heckman has his own ritual.“I always wear my Julius Peppers jersey. It was the first jersey I’ve ever owned and it seems when I wear it the Panthers win.”In Heckman’s opinion the team can’t lose.“The Panthers have Cam Newton to make a strong offense while Luke Kuechly and Josh Norman make a strong defense.”Heckman loves the Panthers’ attitude on the field.“They know how to have fun with the game by the celebrations they have after every touchdown, dabbing, pictures on the sidelines, they know how to have fun,” the Albrightsville resident said.“The Panthers are too cocky,” Andrews said.Along with the rest of the Orange Crush, she is banking on quarterback Peyton Manning.“Everyone keeps asking if this will be his last year, and he isn’t saying, so it could be,” she said.According to Heckman, Manning may be the reason the Panther’s take home the win.“Their weakness is Peyton Manning. He can’t make a lot of big plays, he can’t run the ball if he has to and he has 17 interceptions this year, and with Luke Kuechly and Josh Norman, they have multiple picks this year alone, and Kuechly has a lot of interceptions returned for touchdowns.”Lehighton resident Kaycie Andrew is already familiar with his stats.“My favorite player is Luke Kuechly,” but she gives credit to the rest of the players. “It’s not just one person on the team; a championship is won by all the teammates coming together and wanting it.”Andrew has been a Panthers fan her whole life.“I’ve been watching football since I was little every weekend with my dad,” who happens to be a Dallas fan.According to Andrew, everyone in her house shows loyalty to different colors, including her mother who falls on the opponent’s side of the field.“She just says that the Broncos are going to win because Peyton may retire and he’s gonna go out on top.”Andrewsays it’s time for fresh blood in the winner’s circle.“I think a new team deserves the ring, and that’s the Panthers.“I’ll be putting on my Kuechly jersey and wear it from the time I wake up till the game is over and I go to bed,” she said.Lifelong Broncos fan Dan Procita and family do just the opposite.“On game day we have a thing: No Broncos gear on Sundays during the game,” he said. “It’s a jinx.”Rooting for the Broncos has always been a family affair for the Procitas.“Before my wife was my wife, she surprised me and took me to see a game in Denver. It was like a childhood dream come true,” he said. “I had to marry her after that.”Procita said he rearranges his family in a game of good-luck musical chairs depending on how the team is faring, even stepping out of the room for a few minutes if it helps gain the win.Procita, wife Angie and kids will all gather in the living room for the game this Sunday.“We’ve tried going to parties, but you can’t focus on the game.”Procita and his dad have a tradition of texting during the games.“He lives inKalispell, Montana, where quarterback Brock Osweiler is from; he was the backup for Manning.”He thinks the Broncos are guaranteed the win so Manning can go out on a winning note.“I think the defense will step up. A lot of people are underestimating them, but when Broncos are hitting on all cylinders, they are kind of explosive.”
