Headed to court

Voters in Lehighton Area School District wasted no time Monday filing petitions to have a Carbon County Common Pleas Judge fill a vacancy on the district's board of directors.

According to employees in the Carbon County Prothonotary's Office, four petitions had been filed by 10 a.m., and each is being passed on to the judges for review. The board had 30 days to fill the vacancy, created Jan. 1 when former director William Hill Jr. passed away. The remaining eight members on the board last week voted 4-4 on three candidates to fill the seat. Five votes were necessary for a successful appointment.Carbon County District Court administrator Roberta Brewster said a computer would randomly decide which judge gets the case."If there is a conflict, another judge would be assigned," she said. The court does not have a timeline to make a decision."It will be reviewed and scheduled based upon the availability of the judge's calendar," Brewster said.
