Palmerton parents raise parking concerns

Parking problems at grade schools in Palmerton Borough have touched a nerve in some parents.

People are parking in a "no parking" area, double and triple parking, backing over crosswalk lines and ignoring the police presence during pickup and drop-off, Anne Cronk told the Palmerton Borough Council at the meeting Thursday night."I'm a concerned parent," she said. The offenses don't stop with just those. Cronk said she has seen parents park their cars near fire hydrants or in front of the bank and send their little children off walking toward Parkside Education Center. Sometimes the children walk between the school buses, and most of the children don't use the crosswalks. The crossing guard has told her she feels useless, because too few follow her guidance.Borough Council member Kris Hoffner agreed, saying, "I've seen more kids not using the crosswalks than using them.""It's becoming a major issue," Cronk said. "I don't know if ticketing would help.""Maybe ticketing is what you have to do," said Council President Terry Costenbader. He said that sometimes people just don't pay attention until it affects their wallet.Council member Holly Sell said, "It's a school zone. These are clearly marked school zones. I don't think it is unreasonable to say these are going to be strictly enforced."Sell said the misbehavior becomes contagious. When one person gets away with it, then others see that and think they can, too.

As children cross the street on their way to S.S. Palmer Elementary School in Palmerton, a car is parked in a "no parking" area dropping off a child for school. Parking problems such as this, as well as double and triple parking, were brought up by a concerned parent at the Palmerton Borough Council meeting Thursday night. KRISTINE PORTER/TIMES NEWS
