A man and his mother escaped a burning house late Wednesday, as flames ripped through their single home at 302 South Ave. in Jim Thorpe.

According to deputy fire chief Vince Yaich, the fire broke out at 10:30 p.m., displacing Kathleen and George Hiller.George Hiller crawled out of his second story bedroom window onto the porch roof and then jumped to safety, Yaich said.George was taken to Blue Mountain Hospital — Gnaden Huetten campus and then transported to Lehigh Valley to be treated for smoke inhalation.He remains in the hospital.Firefighters have not found the family’s dog.Flames erupted from the windows and shot through the roof for several minutes until firefighters were able to get them knocked down.Firefighters remained on the scene throughout the early morning hours, returning to the station at 8 a.m.The house was still smoldering this morning.The heat was so intense that siding was melted on a neighboring home at 304 South Ave.Yaich said the fire appeared to be accidental, but a state police fire marshal will make the final ruling.Assisting Jim Thorpe at the scene were Nesquehoning, Lansford, Lehighton, Penn Forest and Summit Hill fire companies.Members of the community have already set up a fund.“My friend George Hiller and his mother’s house burned down last night.
