Schuylkill continues renovations on new Children & Youth offices

Schuylkill County commissioners on Thursday approved a $32,505 purchase order with Light Speed Technologies for wireless hardware, switches, licenses, and installation at the Children and Youth Services Agency's new home, a renovated former beauty school at 324 N. Centre St., Pottsville.

The agency will move into the building from its cramped offices across the street.The county acquired the 21,000-square-foot building, catty-corner from the courthouse, and two adjacent lots, in May 2013 for $740,000 from brothers Dale and Franklin Schoeneman.Initial projections for the renovation came in at $1.78 million.Also on Thursday, commissioners adopted an extension of a settlement agreement with the federal government to make sure all the buildings the county owns or leases meet the Americans With Disabilities Act requirements.The extension is through Sept. 17, 2016.In other matters, commissioners awarded a $113,732 contract to Spotts Brothers Inc. for a 2013 Community Development Block Grant ADA project at the West Penn Township building.The project will build a handicapped accessible entrance.The commissioners also approved training on behalf of the Emergency Management Agency for three members of the Incident Management Team (Arthur Kaplan, David Carichner, and Jeffrey Finlay) to attend the 2015 annual All-Hazards Incident Management Team training and education conference to be held in Denver, Colorado on Dec. 6-10.The conference will provide critical information on lessons learned and best practices developed by other all-hazards incident management teams.All costs associated with the conference, which includes fees, lodging, airfare, travel, and meals, are allocated through Homeland Security grant program funding.Also, on behalf of the Public Works Office, commissioners agreed to seek bids for cleaning of the new Children & Youth Services Agency building at 324 N. Centre St., Pottsville.The bids are due in the controller's office by 3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 30, and will be opened on Dec. 2.
