Palmerton investigates possible threats

Palmerton school officials have updated parents on their investigation into an anonymous Twitter account, which contained inappropriate comments about the school and some students.

Superintendent Scot Engler issued a statement Thursday afternoon saying that police are following up on some leads as to who posted the comments under the name "Kool Kids Klub (@palmertonkkk)," but that he was unable to provide any additional information. The account has since been disabled by Twitter.Engler reiterated what he said in a statement to parents earlier in the day - that no threats have been made to the school district, and that all the district's schools are safe.Schools were open on Friday as scheduled.State police also issued a news release Thursday afternoon. They acknowledged that they have been at the school and investigating who made the comments over the last week under the Twitter handle "Kool Kids Klub (@palmertonkkk)," but said that the suspect or suspects is still unidentified. In his statement, Engler asked anyone with information about the incident to contact state police at Lehighton at 610-681-1850.Some people have alluded to weapons being found in the school in comments posted to the Times News Facebook page.In the statement, Engler addressed those rumors."We are aware of numerous rumors including threats of harm and the discovery of weapons. Unfortunately, in situations such as this, the rumors can quickly get out of hand. Please know there is no truth to any of these rumors," he wrote.Efforts to reach state police trooper Shaun M. Flynn for confirmation were unsuccessful Friday. The district notified parents Thursday morning that there was an anonymous account making inappropriate statements."I know the incident from this morning was difficult for everyone," Engler said in the statement. "The statement … remains true; there has been no threat made to the safety or welfare of anyone in the district."Before the account was disabled, the poster made a series of vague inappropriate comments. One of them appears to be directed at a Palmerton student who is also a player on the football team. But according to published reports, a poll posted on the account Wednesday alluded to an attack on students, but did not directly threaten a particular school. The poster also made comments about the Sandy Hook school shooting tragedy, according to the reports.Parents have posted comments about the incident on the Times News Facebook page, voicing their concerns over the tweets. Some of the posts included screen shots of the tweets."We parents have seen the tweets too. So far there have been five sites. Three have been taken down. But there are still two up and running. Wonder how long it will take for those to be banned? And how long it will take for new ones to start up? We've got to be able to do something to figure out who it is and stop this," Angie Balch posted.Reporter Chris Parker contributed to this report
