Palmerton superintendent: "no threat" from twitter account

(Updated at 6:00 p.m.)

Palmerton school officials have updated parents on their investigation into an anonymous twitter account which contained inappropriate comments about the school and some students.

Superintendent Scot Engler issued a statement just before 5 p.m. Thursday saying that police are following up on some leads as to who posted the comments under the name "Kool Kids Klub (@palmertonkkk)", but that he was unable to provide any additional information.

The account has since been disabled by twitter.

Engler reiterated what he said in a statement to parents earlier in the day -- that no threats have been made to the school district, and that all the district's schools are safe. He also said there was no truth to a rumor that a gun was found in the school.

All Palmerton schools will be open on Friday as scheduled.

State police also issued a press release Thursday afternoon. They acknowledged that they have been at the school and investigating into who made the comments over the last week under the twitter handle "Kool Kids Klub (@palmertonkkk)," but said that the suspect or suspects is still unidentified.

In his statement, Engler asked anyone with information about the incident to contact state police at Lehighton at 610-681-1850.

The district notified parents Thursday morning that there was an anonymous account making inappropriate statements.

"I know the incident from this morning was difficult for everyone," Engler said in the statement. "The statement ... remains true; there has been no threat made to the safety or welfare of anyone in the district."

Before the account was disabled, the poster made a series of vague inappropriate comments. One of them appears to be directed at a Palmerton student who is also a player on the football team.

But according to published reports, a poll posted on the account Wednesday alluded to an attack on students, but did not directly threaten a particular school. The poster also made comments about the Sandy Hook school shooting tragedy, according to the reports.
