Coaldale officer on leave after DUI

Coaldale Borough Council has placed a police officer on administrative leave after he was reportedly charged with his second DUI violation.

The board voted unanimously this week to suspend officer Matthew Williams until further notice. He has been a part-time patrolman for the Coaldale Police Department for two years, according to Sgt. Keith Krapf, the department's officer in charge.Williams has been charged in connection with an Oct. 2 incident that occurred in Butler Township.According to published reports, a vehicle Williams was driving was involved in a crash near the intersection Hunter Highway and Old Turnpike Road around 3 a.m.Officers observed that Williams had a laceration on his face, and no recollection of the crash.He also admitted to police that he was drunk and should not have been driving.The report said that Williams was also fired from a position with Carbon County.Williams is being charged as a first-time offender, however he was also charged with DUI in 2008. That case ended with him being placed in the Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition program for first-time offenders.He previously served as an officer in Sugarloaf Township and Freeland, where he made headlines after being struck by a vehicle while conducting traffic control after a crash.
