Parade, bonfire set in Lehighton

A parade, followed by a bonfire, will be held in Lehighton on Thursday.

On a unanimous vote, borough council last week approved the Lehighton Touchdown Club's request to hold the events.Council said its approval was pending approval from Lehighton Area School Board, which also approved the request at a meeting last week.The Lehighton Touchdown Club traditionally hosts an annual parade and bonfire on the Thursday before its last varsity game of the regular season.The parade will begin at 6:30 p.m. and conclude by 7:30 p.m. at the Lehighton Area High School.It will start at the high school parking lot, proceed left onto Ninth Street, then a right onto Iron Street, where it will make a left onto Sixth Street, followed by another left onto Mahoning Street, where it will proceed to the high school teachers' entrance, and make a left into the parking lot.Participants in the parade will include members of the high school fall sport teams, the Lehighton High School Marching Band, area fire companies and ambulance associations. The student participants will be escorted by coaches, faculty and parents throughout the parade route.The bonfire will then start on the grounds of the high school at the conclusion of the parade.The event is expected to conclude around 8:30 p.m.Lower park projectBorough manager Nicole Beckett said the borough intends to bid the lower park project with several alternates.Beckett said the project would be bid out in December, and awarded in January, with the intent to have the project underway by March, depending on the weather.The project includes curbing, sidewalks and walkway reconstruction, stormwater improvements, cleaning and repair of the Colonel Jacob Weiss Statue, lighting upgrade and installation of decorative lighting, signage for Trailhead Connectivity, crosswalk upgrades and ADA parking/leveling in the upper park.To date, the borough has received $250,000 from the Greenways, Trails and Recreation program, as well as $245,000 from the Department of Community and Economic Development's Multimodal Grant Programs.The total grants are $495,000 with a required match of $142,500, which totals $637,500 for the entire project.The borough will use in-kind services and cash toward the match.Other businessOther action taken by council was as follows:• Adopted an ordinance prohibiting parking during/after snowstorms.• Announced that the rededication of the Sgt. Stanley Hoffman World War II monument will be held at 1 p.m. Nov. 7.• Approved the installation of a fence in Engine Company No. 2 bay separating the police and fire departments in the amount of $2,965.• Hired Claudia Ebbert as a substitute crossing guard pending pre-employment physical and clearances, and to meet with the borough mayor and police chief.• Reclassified Jeffrey Repsher to apprentice lineman, first year, retroactive to July 9, 2015.• Accepted the resignation of Paul Mriss from the borough's Police Civil Service Commission.• Rehired seasonal staff for the winter youth program pending receipts of clearances.• Agreed to transfer the Wacker RD11A Small Roller and New Holland L785 Skid Steer to the Lehighton Water Authority.• Agreed to have concrete piping removed at the borough's Public Works Garage by Nov. 30.• Approved a list of items to be sold at the Lehigh Valley Municipality/Surplus Equipment Auction.• Approved a lease for the recreation center with the Carbon County Area Agency on Aging.• Adopted a resolution designating state aid allocation.• Tabled discussion on the sewer use ordinance.• Agreed to close borough hall on Dec. 24 and Dec. 31.
