Lehighton wins Schuylkill Boys Soccer Championship

HEGINS - There's a new king on the scene of the Schuylkill League soccer fields these days.

And it isn't the vaunted Blue Mountain program, which has claimed 14 titles since its first inspection.Rather it's a second year league entrant - Lehighton.Engaging a dominating performance on both the defense and the offensive side from start to finish, the Indians (17-2) ran amok plucking the Eagles for six goals, to claim a second straight title here Saturday evening at Tri-Valley High School, which hosted the girls' championship with Blue Mountain holding sway, 2-1 over Pine Grove. The 6-0 whitewashing, without a doubt, had a lot to do with the kick and run game that coach Dave Yob likes from his two-year title holders. Besides, there was little offensive weapons the Eagles (14-4-1) were able to find in their attack. In fact, Blue Mountain could only muster four shots on goal, and six corner kicks, while fast rising Lehighton sophomore goalkeeper Greg Vento came up strong in net warding off all four shots.Vento had been ushered into the net in the league semifinals, a 3-2 win over Schuylkill Haven, due to a shoulder injury to standout keeper Tyler Dietz. Dietz, a junior, will miss the postseason tournament, and his teammates were sympathetic for his loss."We lost our concentration when Tyler got hurt (before the start) of the match Thursday," explained Joe Marks who was super in Saturday's league title clincher.Marks poured in three goals of his own for the hat trick, and said his fellow Indians were running on adrenalin from start to finish against the Eagles. "We're playing for him," continued Marks about Dietz, "he's been a big part of our success, and Greg just picked up where he left off."Yob knew his team was going up against a quality program, and stressed afterward: "We had to bring our A-game… that's a quality team there. We had a lot of things going on. I really was thinking 1-0 or 2-1 (about the score). But you know they surprise me sometimes - in a good way, most of the time."Vento was the key, no doubt. To which Yob said,"…Greg did a good job (and) that's all he needs to do. You have four (players) out there with a good defense behind him. All he has to do is maintain and do the little things… like a caretaker back there and things will work out."Lehighton got rolling in the first nine minutes of the opening half. Dan Baka got an assist from Marks at the 9:01 mark with a cross and Baka just nailed it home. The header got the team fired up. "It was a huge goal," Baka said. "Joe made the cross, I saw it coming and placed my head on it and once it went in, (you could) see the excitement on the team - it was a big rush."After that first goal, the Indians were getting another shot of adrenalin, all thanks to Marks and a penalty on a Blue Mountain player for holding on a free kick. There was no doubt that he was going to boot in the second goal with a little more than 10 minutes to play in the half.It was the first of two penalty kicks that Marks would execute. He took a peek at Blue Mountain goalie Aaron Albertini"I was just going to pick a corner, right or left, then I picked my head up and I saw the keeper go right and I put it in the left corner, " Marks said after the first penalty kick. The 2-0 lead went to 3-0 thanks to Frank Bokan who punched in an easy close-range shot. Zach Christoff, who used his quickness to pass by two defenders, set up Bokan's goal."We were a little nervous coming in," continued Marks. He said his second penalty kick at the 64-minute mark was all placement."You could see them starting to drop their shoulders and their heads," said the senior forward. "They started to get a little chippy…"Baka added yet another score thanks to Peter Lawler, by the time the roof went from sag to crumble on the Eagles. And at the 71:10 mark, the Indians capped of the final scoring with Christoff making his point.TITLE TIMBER … The Indians have won three straight league titles; the other crowning came in their last year of the Mountain Valley Conference.LOST PLAYER … Blue Mountain lost center back Ryan Brooks to illness before the game. The Eagles were also flagged for five cards by the officials.ON THE MARK(S) ... The hat trick registered by Marks gives him 38 goals, as the Indians take a No. 2 seed into the District 11 tournament, which opens this week.BACK TO BACK … Marks had his second hat trick of the league tournament. He scored all three goals in the win over the Hurricanes. The Indians have accumulated 111 goals, and only allowed 29.
