Supurban memorial run honors Tamaqua teacher

"It's not what you take when you leave this world behind you, it's what you leave behind you when you go."

Teachers wonder every day if they are making a difference in their students' lives. Sometimes, if they are lucky, a former student will actually say thanks - thanks for being there, thanks for caring, thanks for sharing, thanks for teaching me what I needed to know. So, when former students get together to honor a teacher, that educator must have been doing something right. To her students, the late Thelma Urban, a Tamaqua Senior High School language arts teacher, was a superhero. Her unexpected death in June left her colleagues and former students determined to remember her passion for life and steadfast support of the students. They created the Thelma Urban Memorial Fund, hoping to establish scholarships for the Urban children, Sean and Violet, and for a graduating senior furthering their education in a language arts related field. As a means of raising funds, Urban's supporters have created the Supurban 5K Memorial Run and 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk. The event will be held this Saturday at the Tamaqua Sport Stadium. The 5K Run will begin at 9 a.m. in the stadium. Runners will then travel Stadium Hill to Broad Street to the East End of town. The course will loop back to the stadium. The 1-mile fun run and walk will start at 9:15 a.m. and be contained to the stadium. The theme for the Supurban Run is superheroes, with runners and walkers encouraged to dress as their favorite superhero. Race committee member Kyle Weaver said, "We want to show there's a superhero in all of our lives. Mrs. Urban really was a superhero in the lives of her students."The fun-filled event will also include a variety of vendor stands, as well as a Chinese Auction and numerous activities, such as face painting.Monetary, food, and other material donations supporting the event may be taken to the Tamaqua Area High School and delivered with attention to race organizer Roseann Weinrich.Contributions may also be made to the Thelma Urban Memorial Fund at the Wells Fargo Bank at 17 W. Broad St., Tamaqua.Registration and number pickup will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday. What Mrs. Urban left behind is a legacy of love, positively touching everyone she ever met.
