Mahoning police issue alert for suspect

A Lehighton man with felony warrants eluded police on a three-hour manhunt Wednesday afternoon.

Police are still looking for Mark Dacosta, 33, who is wanted for a burglary in February. At 11 a.m. Wednesday, Mahoning police received a report of a man trespassing on wooded property located at 1290 Upper Nis Hollow Drive. The man, later recognized as Dacosta, was working on a structure in the woods on the side of the Mahoning Mountain.Because the terrain was steep and rocky, Mahoning Township police had to use an SUV to access the property.Officers found a structure under construction, a four-wheeler, homemade stove, tools, a cellphone, and another disassembled structure.During a check of the area officer Tyler Meek saw Dacosta lying in the woods.A warrant had been issued Tuesday for Dacosta for a burglary that occurred on Hemlock Drive in February. When police attempted to surround Dacosta, he fled down the mountain into a heavily wooded area on the south side of Route 443, according to Mahoning Police Chief Audie Mertz.During the search, someone from Route 443 Flower Tent reported a man fitting Dacosta’s description had crossed Route 443 and headed into Lehighton borough. Police also searched the area behind the car dealerships on Route 443.At one point, scanner reports indicated Dacosta was heading toward the Lehigh River.Several departments responded to the search, as well as the helicopter from the Pennsylvania State Police. He is charged with burglary and criminal trespass, both felonies, and two misdemeanors. A check of court records shows that Dacosta has been arrested in other theft cases.Police said he is not considered dangerous, but ask that anyone with information on Dacosta’s whereabouts is asked to call 911.
