Opera house shows off its new logo

The Mauch Chunk Opera House has a new logo, and the organization is showing it off in a prominent way.

An artist recently painted a 15-by-15 mural of the logo on the front facade of the building. The new logo solidifies the opera house's brand as it emerges from a downturn that could have forced the group to permanently close its doors."It's our new brand," Vince DiGiosio said. "We are trying to get rid of any old logos or branding, and start new."After they faced fines from the Liquor Control Board because of noise complaints, they turned to the public for support. The opera house's "Luv it Live" campaign raised tens of thousands of dollars. That allowed the opera house to implement soundproofing measures. Coupled with a new, less draconian noise ordinance in Jim Thorpe, the theater has not been cited for a noise violation since."The campaign was totally successful," DeGiosio said. "It got us to where it needs to be - with enough capital to fund future shows."The logo was actually debuted with the launch of the fundraiser. The opera house sold memorabilia with the new logo during the campaign, which helped it raise as much as it did.DeGiosio said that he and his wife, Christie, have been thinking about a logo that is both modern and vintage at the same time. He wanted it to have some Italian influence, to reflect the Italianate architecture of the building. It also incorporates 1881, the year that the opera house was founded."We've tried to nail something down for years. It's amazing how certain images resolve with different demographics," he said.He said he always envisioned some kind of mural taking up the large blank space on the opera house's facade. And in the short time it has been up, the logo has drawn more attention to the building from tourists walking along Broadway."That's what we're looking for; it makes the building complete and epic," DeGiosio said."That symbol is the opera house."
